My Story

I first picked up my mom’s 35mm film camera when I was in high school. For my 17th birthday, I received a camera of my own—likely because my mom was tired of me constantly borrowing hers. I shot roll after roll of my friends, printed doubles at the Meijer photo lab, and handed them out at school. I loved capturing those moments for people—especially in the days before everyone had a camera in their pocket.

To build a portfolio for art school, I began taking adult education classes at Kendall College of Art and Design. That’s where I fell in love with black and white photography. Even now, the darkroom remains one of my favorite places to be.

I went on to earn my photography degree from Columbia College Chicago, where I spent even more time in the darkroom and studied photojournalism and documentary photography with accomplished, working professionals.

After returning to Michigan, I started building my photography business, photographing weddings, seniors, and families. A few years later, my mom and I opened a bakery, which I managed for 12 years. During that time, I continued to take photos for family and friends, but photography took a backseat.

The bakery closed in 2023 when my mom retired, and I’ve returned to what I love most: photography. I can’t wait to help you capture your memories.

Joana is a West Michigan photographer specializing in authentic portraits of families, kids, seniors, and couples. She’s available for sessions and storytelling moments throughout the greater Grand Rapids area.
